Well Atlus has struck gold in re-releasing and revamping two classics with the first being Radiant Historia and the DS remake feels fresh and still has fun as the original even if it's a strictly 2D game with no 3D thrown in. The story and twist reel you in the deeper the rabbit hole takes you down it and the characters are very memorable and you grow to like/hate them as you see fit. First and foremost I need to get something off my chest after reading a review from a certain site.
This is not a "visual novel" as the reviewer dubbed it as by any means. This is a JRPG hands down and a good one though slight repetition on certain aspects but to call this a visual novel is like calling Final Fantasy a visual novel I mean.....really??
Ok now to the review and starting with the background of Radiant is this was a under the radar DS game but luckily more people will get a chance to play this gem. You are Stocke working under Heiss, who just as Scrooge as well as "insert villain here" sort of face and way with words kind of person as your boss of the Special Intelligence unit and under certain circumstance, well you die but thanks to Teo and Lippti, you are revived and are able to rewrite history to a point the term Groundhogs Day is second nature and a cuss word because you will go back in time ALOT but it's done in an original way that feels refreshing thanks to the White Chronicle Heiss handed you....yea villain handed you a book and you have the power to save the world sorta typical JRPG style but filled with twist and turns. You have branching paths that are good and bad but sometimes you need path b to be played so you can open up path a further in.
Now you can't just revisit a place or time willy nilly, you need to go to a blue door called nodes which means don't play for 20 minutes and think you hit a node and want to visit the past only to find out you have to replay those 20 all over again to advance the story. Yes there is a few issues with the game and there is an add on content that gives you a book to help you level and you may want to buy it just to breeze through some fights but there is DLC with story aspects but after playing Shin Megami Tensi games, I see easy EXP DLC is the norm nowadays. The new stuff added is Possible Histories which just is a "what if" scenario but you have two choices when starting the game which can add it now or after new game plus.
The voice acting is really good and the music sets the mood of the game perfectly but what I come to realize with 3DS games is audio is not as good as Vita with certain games but that's something to deal with when it comes to the very useful bottom screen that shows a map and not have to go through menus to find one in RPG games. Overall Radiant Historia seals the deal with what people want in an JRPG and Atlus keeps proving they are the company to go to when wanting an RPG for handhelds.
Score 8.5 out of 10
Pros: A great story throughout
Great cast of characters
Original style of gameplay
Cons: Haven't we talk to characters way too much that you can say their lines to a T?
Battling enemies can be repetitive at times.
