Ys should be well known to RPG fans like myself though I started during the PS2 days but I played Chronicles at a friends house on the Wii and thought it was fun. Well come now to 2015 and Chronicles is out on iOS though it's just the first for now but the final scene makes me think Ys 2 is being developed or it was just left in for kicks. The game is about Adol Christin looking for the Books Of Ys and there's other quest but you won't bother with a few till close to the end game.
Gameplay is different than most ARPG's in the way that there's no Attack button and you basically ram enemies to destroy them. Also no power leveling as you can only get to level 10 and your strength and defense is based on equipment that you find. About quest, you get them quick but only one you can do while others start a hour or so in the game and there's no quest tab so try writing notes if you are easily forgetful. You do go through dungeons basic ARPG style but it also has a zelda like trait (or better yet zelda adopted the trait) of using items you get in dungeons or from NPC's to complete puzzles.
The hard factor is pretty good with some easy parts but it starts to get tough with a shall we say bat creature boss (true fans will know this and shudder at the name). Now to weigh in on the slightly bad (though it did get an update prior to after this was done but haven't replayed it yet) the localization. It's pretty bad just to point out. Some letters just made their way into sentences that now won't make sense but after I replay it again I will update on the localization aspect but a question is, why not go with the original and NOT to some localization crew to rewrite the game with some parts just plain bad?
Sound and graphics as a great aspect as there's original and Chronicles version with music having 3 options. Movement is fluid and easy to navigate and everything is pretty easy though you can lose your way if not careful but there is a hint system though lite on hints can help in certain situations. Ys has a great length time with it not being too long but also not too short and hopefully Ys 2 does come out in its original form.
Final thoughts- minus weird localization the game holds up truly well and is great to play on the go with a save anywhere anytime system plus it can bring new fans along with the old fans into this and maybe Ys will have a great future on iOS.
Should you get it? Well a good story with a good bit on combat and puzzles makes this a great ARPG that the fans can get into unlike most ARPGS these days being online only. New upgraded music along with the old versions makes it a great listen to as well.
