Rainbow Skies is finally out and I can say it is much improved over Rainbow Moon while still the same in some aspects like CG being added and crisper graphics while still holding true to the same formula but tweaked a bit. The game can still be just as difficult as Moon so grinding for coins and experience is needed for hours but you have more areas to explore and items to gain but more on that later so let us not waste time on the review.
The story opens up as one of the main characters named Damion, is out partying at the local bar and wakes up with a hangover and needs to take his exam for monster taming (yes a new feature added) and it only goes down from there literally and next thing you know him and his buddy Layne are forever binded to a mage named Ashly and a big quest ensues that takes them around the world. Off the bat sidequests open up and some often repeat for much needed items and you need to buy bags regularly to keep your item count high or be forced to use or sell them on the spot and hidden items across the open map are also a new thing but if looking in a cave be sure to bring torches because you need them to find items and once you see a question mark pop up congratulations now hunt some more. There are no random encounters just like in Moon and that to me is always a plus because random encounters in this gaming age can turn to a bore so keep eye on what monsters you can fight on the bottom of the screen.
Gone are pearls and introduced is upgrade tokens and you will learn to love or hate them but you won't last in later battles unless you grind your heart out and upgrade but the red ones are so rare in the early game and it shouldn't be but the blue ones are pretty common and are needed for health upgrades so use them for your party and it still is counted for the whole team so prepare your team with them. Upgrading gear is the same with using the blacksmith and always go for what the item is for like for weapons go for strength and so forth because upgrades are limited to the items. There are a lot of new enemies and some annoying ones like the farmers who can hit your whole party and you will learn spells by books this time instead of scrolls and to gain more magic getting your spells to a certain level is needed but some require 2 moves which in the game can be tough if you don't plan your moves right though if wanting to, you can increase your battle rank and fight harder enemies if overleveled.
Overall things are the same but there is a good bit that is new that it doesn't become stale but I did come across something odd with buttons not wanting to register so it is either a bug or my vita but it only happens with Skies so hopefully I'm not the only person getting it. Cleaner graphics and the increased emphasis on story is a welcome but grinding can make it a bore at times. I still say pick up Rainbow Skies if you love RPGs or Rainbow Moon because the game proves what is old can still be/feel new.
Score 8.5 out of 10
Pros: upgrade in graphics and gameplay
More story
The humor can be funny
Cons: Grinding can be a chore
Things cost a lot of coins
