What is there not to say about the awesome 8-bit graphics or the ever changing difficultly that works so well or the fact that I wish this was on the NES when I had mine? Well there's a lot actually and it's all fantastic.
You are Shovel Knight on the rescue for your buddy Shield Knight and it's a fun ride that reminds the older folks of the great NES days and classics like Ducktales, Mega Man and Mario Brothers 3. You only have your armor and a shovel both can be upgraded but how badass is shovel jumping on enemies? Boss fights use weapons that you find in the levels and some fights are a instant classic (clock tower fan here). The music is fantastic an isn't too loud but has that classic 8-bit chip tunes that we all loved and newcomers can experience.
Speaking of music, each level has one or more music sheets that after you enter the town, you can get coins off of and replay anytime you want and once you unlock Kratos fight on playstation, I bet you will replay over and over. I wish this was on NES back in the day as I would have a blast like I did when playing. There's even a expansion coming this year that increases game time and adds new gameplay style. There is a lot of characters from classic games you will recognize with a Shovel Knight look to them.
Levels have a difficulty that is true to the NES days that go from easy to pain inducing hard but that's how it should be with the days when no walkthroughs didn't exists and it was based on trial and error. You have healing items like chicken and apples but after boss fights you enter a dream state which is pretty neat but offers a ticket for health upgrade you take to the cook and there's also a mage upgrader as well. Upon beating the game does offer a NG+ for replaying fun, and who wouldn't replay this right?
Final thoughts: this is a instant classic that takes homage to past games while still having a modern twist for new and old and does everything nice and neat with 8-bit styling and will remain a GOTY or GOTC for as long as systems exists. So should you buy it? Easy answer: YES!!! You should.
