Danganronpa: Another Episode should be a GOTY on vita. We can just say that right now. From the CG cutscenes, music and story. Everything plays its part like a big stage concert and shines. The first 2 Danganronpa titles were more Pheonix Wright meets Saw while Another Episode meets Gears Of War and Silent Hill. I have yet to stop playing only to take time from doing the review.
Story: You are Komaru Naegi the sister to the main character from the first title Makoto. Trapped in your aparment for a year and a half you just want to escape and you do after a Monokuma tries to attack you. Saved and handed a hacking gun, you can now fight back with what's used in it called truth bullets and there is different kinds of ammo. You have a helper named Toko Fukawa (yes that one) who has her own agenda but needs the extra help just like you. I don't want to give the story away but Warriors Of Hope are some sick kids.
Gameplay: 3rd person shooters on vita have been pretty soild but this is really great. It's part story, part shooter and part puzzles that make this a pretty in depth game. The hacking gun is one part of the game the other part is a hack and slash thanks to Toko. There is different modes but I didn't notice a ramp up to toughness maybe item drops and battery. Puzzles are in 2 forms: monoku-man arcades and challenges that kids bring you as you progress. Gameplay is broken down to 6 chapters but it's not short by anymeans and replay is very high. You collect all sorts of files like silent hill and most give added back story which are neat to read. The different kinds of monokuma's are crazy and some bullets are required to beat certain types. After a chapter you are given a grade and each one gives you a certain amount of monokuma coins.
Sound and presentation: Tons of catchy tunes keeps the game's tight squeeze on you with different genres like Jpop and dark slow melodies. The monokuma's can be haunting enough with the kids cheering some "light hearted" chorus in scenes or a Persona like tune that fits the game but also makes you wonder how it got in. Menus are bright and any tutorials you come across are added in the help section. Maps are include and it's easy to know where to go so you wont get lost while item searching.
Voice acting is spot on and does a great job with telling the story though I wonder why CG scenes don't have subtitles. Item machines are placed frequent enough not to be too frquently but at times your full ammo can drain quickly but you can boost your bullets with bling. Bling is two words that can make that ammo better than it's regular start. You can always just aim for the right eye for insta kill as well to save ammo.
Final thoughts: Get this game right meow. Story does answer a few questions from the previous games but it's mostly about the story of Komaru and Toko. Gameplay is hard and fast paced but also has fun with the different styles of puzzles the game throws at you so it's a break from heavy shooting and hello to heavy thinking. Trophy people will like the challenge to complete these as it can be tough but well worth that plat. The game is so deep that once you start it will be hard to stop which makes this a great title.
