The original Corpse Party turned out to be a huge game to adventure and horror fans alike with its part visual novel and part choose your own adventure game style with multiple endings. The sequel was good but not as good as the original and what horror movies are good as the original? The third and final game Blood Drive looks to go back to the first title with adding new things but how does it go?
SPOILERS!!!!!
Story-Poor Ayumi...she and a group of friends do the ritual Sachiko Ever After and get transfered to the Heavenly Host Elementary, which sounds like a place in Silent Hill. Ayumi caused her friends deaths plus her sister's and now wants to bring them back so what could go wrong..right? Without spoiling it, you are back at Heavenly which should be destroyed yet has got to be in worse condition than last time you seen it. The visual novel does a great job in telling what happened in past games that even newcomers can understand but will be better to still play the past two since this takes place a few months after Book Of Shadows.
Graphics- Well who would have thought chiibi style would work in a horror game? While looking cute, still has the dark story telling of previous games and shows at the start. Now this uses Unity which is great and makes for great games but this has issues I will get into more later. I will say the flashlight makes shadows look very weird and can cause some slowdown. Heavenly Host couldn't look better though with broken floors, pulsing walls and now traps.
Gameplay- The game play is still the same and that part is great but there is added features that make it good and bad. First is traps which is a great new addition. From loose flooring, glass and piano wire *wink*wink it is all there for you to avoid or you will lose HP. Next is Darkening which the term has been used before but with the power of 3D you can see what it can do. Keep touching stuff like bookcases and dead bodies the screen starts to get harder to see and could result in one losing their mind but find statues that can cleanse your body and good as new.
Last is phantoms who can chase you. They are more annoying than scary and somehow the tool to not be dected seems broken at times. You hide in a locker and your shown footsteps in stop light fashion: green is go, yellow is wait till green and red is very close/caught. Most of the time I was caught and had to run around tricking the phantom. It gets worse when there everywhere and no protective charms to kill them. Another losing scare factor is the loading. While not as long as some have said, it gets so annoying to see it over and over after every entering of a room and main menu (which has the longest loading). It's like watching a streamed horror movie that buffers every 20 seconds.
Another issue is when a chapter is completed, you are sent to the main menu abd have to hit new chapter which feels weird and loses more scare factor but that is the last issue. Everything else goes great together.
Sound and presentation- This game has the best use of audio I have heard. It uses 3D audio which I found by playing a music game and makes talking or sounds come not from just right or left speaker but all around though headphones strongly needed. Music is creepy and starts/stops always at the best times which is rare these days. The game menu itself is easy to navigate and isn't cluttered or hard to manage. A map would have been great as sometimes finding places can be tough but getting lost is part of the fun.
On top of the main story's chapter are extra chapters that go into more story and are pretty short but still manage to give a pretty big story. There is a music player that lets you play the music you heard throughout the game. Also are stills of the story you can look at once you unlock it after the chapter is completed. Soulful Testimonies is a thanks from each cast member plus them telling about the character they play which is a neat listen.
Last thoughts- The final tale (or is it) is a must play for fans with it's 15 plus hour game that goes the extra mile with the new engine that does hit some bumps along the way. Lots of features for longtime fans and really does a good job with its characters throughout. Multiple endings are sure to please everyone and a there is a menu that keeps track of them. Loading is an issue but if you can deal with it, you have a good game from the series.
Score: 8.0
Pros- Even more gruesome thanks to Unity
Audio and music are amazing
Deatiled characters great use of new characters
Heavenly Host looks creepier
Cons: Loading after entering and leaving rooms and menu
Phantoms are annoying to the point they lose their scare factor
Unity makes shadows with the
flashlight weird and flickers.
