Music games have been doing well like Rock Band and Guitar Hero while others like DJ Hero didn't sell well enough to make more of. Doesn't mean it wasn't fun though. PM Studios is releasing a title called SuperBeat:XONiC which is a spritul successor to DJ Max 3 Portable, a hit for music fans on PSP. So how is it you wonder? Well read on..
Xonic takes certain gameplay elements from DJ Max 3 and makes it newer and fresh that previous fans can easily jump into while new fans can easily understand the controls and how to play thanks to the great tutorial. Gone are music videos of the song and hello are trippy visuals that while might be hard to concentrate on, feel like part of the song. There are over 50+ tracks with alot of genres included so each player will find a song they like even if you don't like them all. Gameplay includes 4 main modes that are 4Trax,6Trax,6 TraxFX and Freestyle.
4Trax is the basic mode and the easiest one of the three while 6TraxFX includes not only six spots to hit but uses the L and R buttons as well and is the hardest mode which is a nightmare on later songs. Freestyle lets you choose the 3 modes for any song if you played it on one of other modes and is more a highscore game with how many chains of notes you still have after playing songs. Playing harder songs reward you with more EXP for you to level up with and after gaining new levels, unlocks new tracks, DJ icons for boost or a new sound for note hits.
Another mode is World Tour which is not for the faint of heart as the missions it includes are above hard or even surpasses it. Completing misssions rewards you with better DJ boosters or new sounds. DJ icons are boosters that help boost health, your shield or your Fever. Fever is the same fever in DJ Max but notes don't go any faster than they are now and activates when full so no pressing X button. DLC will be happening after launch so even more songs will be added for gameplay. There is 2 modes to adjust diffculty which is the basic easy, normal and hard followed by note speed. Not only that there is ghost equipment that takes down the map and you have to guess where to hit the perfect note and there are others but that is always the fun part: expermenting what works for you the player.
If you like music games this title is a must buy and even if can't do World Tour there is still more than enough for fans to keep playing.
Score 9 out of 10
Pros: Lots of song choices and genres
Easy to pick up and play
Nice challenge
Lots to unlock
Cons: World Tour not for the faint of heart.
