I said I was doing it so here I am talking about the good and bad of Final Fantasy 8 through 12. I'm leaving out 7 because to me it paved the way for these other RPGs to be like they are now plus seven is "The Holy Grail" to most people. First let us go through the good in 8: It had the second best PS1 era intro with the music and intro to the Squall/Seifer rivalery and even though most of it was just CG from the game, it nailed the set up.
The story was on a larger scale than 7 mostly due to the invasion arc which I believe started on disc 2 but also it felt bigger with areas and the map itself. Limit breaks were flashy and easier to use or get to at least. Lastley it had a great cast minus Squall. Now the bad: Story sucked when the whole past/present/future thing started not to mention the whole space thing with the aliens it felt out of place a bit. The junction system was a bad idea mostly because to get the best stats you use the best magic which was mostly what you used like Aura for example or Ultima.
Starting in 8 you got most extra story content through reading stuff like you do in 13 which means Square didn't feel the need to explain stuff through sight just through text. That to me was the bad of 8.
9 which just came on to mobile is one of the best and considered last great Final Fantasy with the back to basic party style and how each character has their own trait like dragoon and theif. The story had alot of emotion and was better than 7&8 with all the characters friendly and not emo or a dick/douche. The only things bad was the card game which made 8's a cakewalk and the trance system. If you were almost at a boss and your trance activated, you had to grind again which the later half wasn't bad but earlier it could take a good while.
10 oh boy 10 and X-2 the red headed step child of the group. I did a review not too long ago on these but I will say some things I left out. First Youjimbo is the worst summon. He has no overdrive and you pay him to do random damage. I rather take Odin in 8 thank you. Next the god awful sphere grid. It takes forever to make a dent in that and X already has a high encounter rate I think even more than 4 had. Even though it was the first, lip sync in X-2 was even worse than in X.
Since 11 was an mmo I'll just skip it which brings me to 12 or what I call Final Fantasy Wars. If you look at the story of 12 and Star wars, it is very neck and neck with the same substance which is neat. Graphics were awesome and CG was really well done. I think the battle system was far better than X-2's waiting game even though you have it as active system. The story was the strong point with it being not centered around one or two characters. Everyone seemed like a main character which is something X didn't feel like to me. Sidequest were plenty but not as much as X-2 and though story was about the same length as X-2 it wasn't cheesy. The DS sequel od 12 was to me the first direct sequel while X-2 was just fan service and bad fan service at that like SAO: Hollow Fragment bad. 12-2 as I call it, you learn more about the world though it some points it did feel sort of new in some aspects. Also 12-2 played like a MOBA that is offline which I thought was neat at the time. The only thing bad I could say about 12 was the voice acting seemed muffled which I guess since they had alot of content it had to be.
The reason I wrote this is because 15 looks awesome and while I hope it will be good I also hope it will be able to bring alot more fans in because 13's story was the most confusing mess (though a beautiful one at that). Also i'm a huge FF fan and it is actually great to look at the bigger picture of the FF realm.
