The visual novel/dating sim/mystery dungeon/rpg has finally released and when I group it into those I mean it's all of those. I will admit it took a bit at first to like to it and when just starting to like a character, The huge beast Trillion lets me know I can't. Yes you will die alot but that is where the fun lies....or someone who loves death gets excited? Well there is more to it than that but there is a bit to cover. First you have to train your overlords and there are multiple ways to do so. First is the basic training for different stats like Aura or Mana which then can go to a certain stat boost or either a passive or active skill. This is also a management game and one to plan carefully. 2nd is the Valley Of Swords which is a rogue style mystery dungeon that you can complete within a limted amount of moves also you can get rare items here.
Last is the most challenging part: beat Mokujin (yes from that fighting game) and you get some stats depending on the grade you get which is poor, good, great and excellent. You have a choice of six overlords but have a certain way to choose so not all will be there to pick and more will show as story moves on. This is a gripping story and I believe if it didn't have that then the game wouldn't have been as fun but the music and visuals are also great and very Disgaea like though very much its own thing. The parody of games like how it was with Neptune isn't here but this time it is more nods to games like your sparring partner and if you look close maybe a chocobo.
The story as I mentioned is great and won't mention to much of it but you are Zeabolos who is the great overlord and I guess nothing happens at the castle because Trillion as he is kown, comes and wrecks the underworld and the other overlords are out and about and not gaurding the castle. The characters all have personality and are each part of the deadly sins like greed and so forth and it's done really well. About training you also get a token for the gatcha machine for the overlords because the affection bar needs to be raised if you want to stand a chance against Trillion. You have different color hearts as well which go: purple which is heartbroken, blue sorta liked it, yellow liked it, orange loved it to pinkish red which means it is their item of choice and only three items per day can be given out.
Now Trillion battle the evil beast himself. The fights will be one on one unless you have your companions with you who are good at one thing like range fighting, defense and magic they can be a little not smart but they also catch Trillion's attention so that is always a good thing. Now Trillion does have more than one form and each form requires you to relearn his moves but there is always time because you have 3 times to retreat per overlord but you need affection points. It is also to be said no matter health or MP, your affection stats will be used up first so plan ahead.
The game is solid and who would have thought a game centered around a huge boss could have so much depth but it does. Is it perfect? No but it does great with no lag or long loading. Also yes there is more to Trillion but the other stuff is better found out on your own. I will say it's weird to have to beat the game to unlock the music but the tracks are great and go with the mood of the game. Hats off to IdeaFactory and Compile Heart for a fun and challenging game.
