Turtles In Time, Streets Of Rage and even the X-Men beat em ups in the 90's were classics and we had other good ones as well but those are the stand outs of the beat em up era. Graphics upgraded and left that genre in the dust, but slowly they made a comeback with the retro feel or challenge with the modern thouch and it brought new fans to the genre even added RPG elements to the fold. That is where Mages's Phantom Breaker fits in with the retro graphics with a modern touch but how does it do in the long run....well let us see.
The game offers 4 characters or the added 5th character by means of DLC who goes by Kurisu from Steins Gate fame and more characters the better but why doesn't she get a story though not saying the others have a story but more on that later. You have 7 levels to complete in all and each is about 10 to 11 minutes so take that as you will but there is multiplayer but seeing how I am reviewing this late...the MP is more dead than The Walking Dead walkers. couldn't even get a person to come after making a room so yeah that is deader than dead. The graphics do look great and the fluid movement is a treat to see with clothing and hair moving and the controls work good.
The story is pretty dumb but it feels so out of place like you came in the middle of a show or movie expecting to care about the characters. I wish the story was either better or taken out which is why Stein Gate's character is great because she has not a drop of story though it sucks because a Steins Gate story could have been fun to see. There is arcade mode for score chasing for those who dig that kind of thing. There is a leveling up aspect with skills to earn and stats to boost but I can't manage all characters plus unlocked ones to level 50 because it gets so boring just tapping X that I have no interest replaying this mainly because it is 1.5 GB I believe or 1.2 either way that is huge for a beat em up. The other characters feel different but only slightly and after you beat easy you will find it hard to continue this even after admiring the graphics.
Another weird thing is the trophies. I am not a huge trophy chaser but the trophies are all bronze with maybe one silver but I wasn't expecting a plat but all bronze with some of the requirments is just weird. Beat em up fans will enjoy this but multiple playthroughs I highly doubt it. It is fun while it last.
Score 7.0 Out Of 10
+Retro graphics and the character models
The enemies look detail
Boss fights seem challenging
- Tap the action button to win and repeat over again
Story is a bust
Why is a Steins Gate character even in this?
